Perfect Timing: A Beautiful Day and A Day Off

SCRANTON — On street after street in Scranton there were kids outside playing.

Temperatures were in the 60s in mid-November and it was a day off from school.

A combination kids and parents were loving.

“Mother nature is so unpredictable I mean it’s just such a beautiful day.  The kids woke up and asked me to get out their flip flops and shorts after just packing it all away.  It’s a great treat for them especially with the day off,” said Lori Barrett, of Scranton.

Lori Barrett’s kids were just having fun with dirt but for her and many moms and dads, kids burning some energy outside is nice before the many months inside ahead.

They were looking for things to do and I just said go outside and play, it’s a beautiful day!

At Marywood University classes were in session, but that didn’t keep artist Erin McMahon inside. She was painting the last glimpses of fall.

Summer Intern Dunk Tank

What better way to say thank you for all the hard work our summer interns have put in than with a trip to the… dunk tank?  Well, that’s what happens when you put Joe Snedeker in charge!

*No interns were harmed in the making of these videos, well, at least as far as we know!!

Rare Transit of Venus Will be Visible Tuesday

Tomorrow, Venus will pass across the face of the sun, producing a silhouette that no one alive today will likely see again, says NASA.

Transits of Venus are very rare, coming in pairs separated by more than a hundred years. This transit, the bookend of a 2004-2012 pair, won't be repeated until the year 2117. Fortunately, the event is widely visible. Observers on seven continents, even a sliver of Antarctica, will be in position to see it.

Too Foggy To Fly: Helicopter En Route From Allentown to Michigan Forced To Land

Too Foggy To Fly: Helicopter En Route From Allentown to Michigan Forced To Land

FORESTVILLE - A construction helicopter carrying three men made an emergency landing on a baseball field near the Forestville Citizens Fire Company on Monday afternoon due to fog.

Mike Jones, one of the pilots from Construction Helicopters Inc., Howell, Mich., who was having lunch at Palermo's Pizza, near Minersville, about 3 p.m., said they were flying a 1962 Sikorsky S58T and had to make the landing after they were unable to see due to heavy fog.

Matt Pelt and Scott Leduc, also pilots for Construction Helicopters Inc., were with Jones.

Jones said they took an airplane from Michigan to Allentown, then left Allentown with the helicopter and were only in the air for a matter of minutes when they made it to Forestville but they had to land.

They were on their way back to Howell, Mich.

Rain Expected for Next 2 Days But Drought Threat Could Continue in Schuylkill County

Rain Expected for Next 2 Days But Drought Threat Could Continue in Schuylkill County

There has been an abundance of rain over the past couple weeks in Schuylkill County and it will continue for at least the next two days...

Weather Blamed for Playground Opening Delay

There is a playground in one Schuylkill County community that has new equipment, but children can't use it yet. The weather is to blame for the play delay.

Pottsville city crews are about two weeks behind in their work. Officials said it's because of all the rain we have received.

That's also why the Peacock Street Playground is empty. It has $15,000 worth of new equipment which can't be used because of the recent rains.

"It put our contractor behind work on his schedule, which put our schedule behind two weeks," explained Dan Kelly of the Pottsville Street Department.

Parts of the playground are still covered with mud. That means heavy equipment can't get in. Safety measures have to be installed, including grading and mulch, which will lessen the chance of injury should a child fall.
