Patients Can’t Get Records from Shuttered Hospital

An Action 16 investigation into the fallout from the recent shut down of St. Catherine Medical Center in Schuylkill County reveals problems for former patients.

Many cannot get their own medical records because the records are locked up inside the shut down hospital

A federal judge forced St. Catherine Medical Center in Fountain Springs into bankruptcy liquidation in April and that caused the hospital to shut down and lock its doors.

By doing that, the hospital also locked up information that doctors and patients really need.

Breast cancer survivor Cheryl Varndell said the time spent caring for her infant granddaughter, Bianca, kept her calm at her home in Gordon during a two-week period in April when she feared her cancer had returned.

Her doctor in Pottsville discovered a lump in her breast during a routine exam and wanted to see her recent mammogram.

Teen Crash Victim Identified

School officials in Schuylkill Haven have identified a teenager killed in a crash Thursday evening near Gordon.

Kevin Holmes, 17, was a passenger in a car that crash on Deep Creek Road just south of Gordon.

Police said the 17-year-old driver was injured. there is no word on his condition.

The principal at Tri Valley High School said Holmes was a junior at the school.

The investigation into the crash continues.

 

Unemployment: The Faces Behind the Numbers

For several years now we have heard the discouraging numbers over and over again. High unemployment, layoffs at company after company and many signs of a struggling economy in our area.

Newswatch 16 goes behind the numbers and meets just some of the people impacted by all the statistics.

The list of layoffs has been long.

  • Marion Community Hospital in Carbondale closes with 230 jobs lost.
  • Global Tungsten and Powders in Bradford County slashes 150 jobs.
  • Offset Paperback in Luzerne County gets rid of 70 jobs.
  • Springs Window Fashions in Lycoming County cuts 150 jobs.

These are just some of the recent layoffs in our area.
